Throughout the ages humanity has rebelled against God and continued to live a life engrossed in the world, tossed about by every impulse and desire.  The focus on self has always been top priority, often at the expense of others and even our own selves.  This grieves our Father in heaven who created us to be in a loving relationship with Him.  However, we choose a life apart from Him disobeying how he commands us to live.  This disobedience is called sin and keeps us separated from God.

Revival happens when masses of people in cities, regions, and even nations humble their hearts and turn back to God.  This involves repenting (turning away) of sin and making Jesus the Lord of their lives.  As they surrender their lives and come into relationship with the Lord Jesus who starts to make them more like himself.
